Ubuntu Installed

Blogged on June 23rd, 2007 at 5:07pm

I was planning on backing up my system before installing it as last time I had a bad experience with SuSE, but here I am.. one foot in the pool of Linux. Obviously it’s probably the most easy to use and idiot proof (or Windows proof?) distro out, but hey, it’s brilliant.

Unfortunately I’m writing this from Windows, since when I rebooted after the LiveCD install, it never gave me the option to boot back into Ubuntu. I think I’ll try this out for a while and then boot back onto Windows for some Battlefield 2142 ownage…

Ubuntu CD has arrived

Excellent. I ordered this a couple of weeks ago, and infact Ed reminded me last night I did. Funnily enough, it came this morning and it seems to work, though I’m not planning on doing much with it until I’ve made my HP backup disks that the embedded program has been forcing me to install every few weeks since I bought it. Which reminds me, the next time I pop into town - probably Monday - I need to get some blank DVDs.

Mike Moore’s Sicko

Blogged on June 21st, 2007 at 1:54am

Who else has seen Sicko by Michael Moore? *raises hand* I have. It’s pretty good, and it does appear to be loaded with facts until you get to the bit about his hate site. I emailed JimK (www.moorewatch.com webmaster) expressing my (mostly negative) opinion of him. A few hours later I received a typically arsey email back from him, but honestly, putting me back in my place. It seems Moore is not only good at sailing boats into Cuba and filming controversial documentaries, but he’s also pretty good at editing bits out and withholding facts to twist certain stories. Although in all honesty, the only bit that he twisted (to my knowledge, at least) was a personal attack on JimK.

I guess all journalism (if you’d like to call it that - Moore seems to like calling the film that) has to be somewhat controversial. I’m not sure what it’s all like in America, living under the “safe” hands of the BBC who prides themselves on their honesty, fairness and impartiality, but it seems most things there have a certain degree of blatant bias towards them. How does one now define journalism nowadays?

Completely missing the point, Sicko is a film exposing the corruption inside the American health system. For those who don’t know much about America’s health system, they use insurance instead of a national health service like most other countries do. Infact, even Cuba does. As does France, a worldwide renowned country for their high standards of medical care.

After watching it I came to the conclusion that putting seperate profitable businesses directly in charge of the most precious thing human existence is fabricated out of - life - is quite a bad idea. At the end of the day the documentary promotes the idea that, to cut to the chase, a dead person is the insurance company’s profit.

Mike Moore has been known to have strong anti Bush opinions, but then again who doesn’t? After watching the film I think it would be a good idea for the system to go under independent review. But then again, there’s no real independence in such a supposedly corrupt country like America.

If you’ve not heard, Mike Moore is virtually endorsing sharing Sicko over BitTorrent. Look out for it on your favourite torrent site - mine was about 700mb. It’s definitely worth the watch if you want some controversial material, or if you’re just a tad political.

WebmasterLibrary: Keep or forget?

Blogged on June 18th, 2007 at 2:35pm

Frequent readers, such as GoogleBot, will remember my mentioning of the purchase of “webmasterlibrary.info”, powered by a custom script that pulled results and content from RSS feeds, basically meaning that there was no need for me to do anything - simply just leave it to let the money roll in. Either way I couldn’t update the site since it’s encoded!

I bought the site for £18, which is $36. At the time it wasn’t much money, and I thought I might as well try it out as an experiment to see just how successful these niche sites are. Well, so far it’s not going so great. Admittedly I would say the script is pretty crap and I could do a damn slight better than whoever programmed it.

Here are a few of its downfalls… Read all about it…

Time to learn to skin Wordpress.

Blogged on June 17th, 2007 at 12:10am

As much as I love Mandigo, I can’t help but feel unhappy about using something that I didn’t make on my blog, being a web designer and all. It’s bad enough that I’ve sacrificed my soul to using Wordpress, so (now yesterday) this afternoon, I spent my time whipping something better up.

Alt Virtue’s New LayoutAfter finishing it up and getting the structure up to scratch, along with making some kickass wires with the pen tool without following a tutorial, I showed it to J and he told me where to go to achieve the style I was trying to tap (which was a mixture of grunge and tech). So, thanks to him for the pointers.

Anyways, click the thumbnail and take a look. Leave a comment and tell me if you like it :)
