Public Transport Stupidity.
by Will on Aug.16, 2008, under Uncategorized
Recently I took a trip to where I used to live - Portsmouth. Not being able to drive quite yet really was a pain in the neck, although one of the perks of trains right out of London is that you can get to the coast in about an hour.
Anyway, I got off the train and headed to the bus station. I felt like a fish out of water when I learnt that the bus I needed to get only came every hour, which was the norm for bus timetables, in London, on a bank holiday, around about 2 years ago. Backwards? Definitely.
The next thing that bugged me was the fact that there are two public transport operators in the area: Stagecoach, and First. In London, and any other properly maintained city with a local government that isn’t brain-dead, one would only assume that there is either one transport company that accounts for all of the public transport routes, or at least company transferrable tickets. Luckily for where I live, this is the case. In Portsmouth however, it is not.
Train ticket from Surbiton to Havant (~60 miles): £12.15
Bus tickets from Havant to Horndean (~5 miles): £7.50
Cab fare from Horndean to Havant station, because apparently in Hampshire people don’t get on buses after 8pm: £8.50
Crap like this makes me want to get into local government politics and start kicking the shit out of people who mess it up.
Infact, plan b for my life: politician.
